May 2 Truxton Inn DC - A neighborhood bar with classic cocktails in a cozy space

When I first heard that the folks behind McClellan’s Retreat (one of my favorite cocktail bars in DC!) were opening up a new spot ( IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD, no less!) I was beyond excited! I’ve waited a long time for it now, but it’s finally here!

The Truxton Inn is my definition of a classy and cozy haunt – an old school looking but modern bar with gorgeous furnishings, comfy couches, bookshelves, and generally sultry vibe. I love everything about the space– the pineapple lamps, the décor of photographs and books, the dim (but sufficient) lighting, the ceiling trims, and the overall atmosphere. I think they totally nailed the classic hotel bar look without being stuffy! The patio coming later in the summer will be a great addition!

If you’ve been to McClellan’s Retreat or Barrel (also from this group) you probably already know that their cocktails are top notch. I’m happy to report that Truxton Inn is no different. Bar man Brion Nixon obviously knows what he is doing here. No super crazy 10 ingredient cocktails – just a list of 6 classics (think daiquiris, martinis, Manhattans) and 6 variations on the classics, all SOLID. These will change seasonally.

One of my favorites on their opening list is the “no-se’ groni”, a mezcal version of the classic negroni. The “Congressman’s Lunch martini” is another delicious drink, made with local DC Civic Vodka (or gin if you prefer), dry sherry, and pickle brine. Most cocktails are in the $11 - $13 range, but if you want to splurge they have a Whistle Pig rye Manhattan that goes for $25.

Cocktails are the main focus here, but they do have beers and wines as well. Food-wise, there are a few bar snacks available (sour cream and onion popcorn!), and they will be selling kolaches from local makers Republic Kolache. Plus, Meats and Foods is right next door – making for a perfect post-Truxton Inn stop for a half smoke!

And yes, there will be a Happy Hour with $6 cocktails, $5 wines and even $3 Miller High Life. Good cocktails at $6 are hard to come by in this city, so I say this is a fantastic deal!
