For most DC folks, a weekend away to another city means a trip to NYC. We’ve done that numerous times so decided to change things up and head to Philadelphia instead. And seriously, Philadelphia does not seem to be considered as frequently as it deserves to be, given the great stuff there is to do, and EAT there! Anyway, more on what we did and ate and drank in another post.

We stayed at The Windsor Suites, which is part of the Modus group of hotels. I have previously confessed my love for Modus Hotels when The Quincy in DC, which has since been sold, was a part of the Modus family. Further cementing that love was my recent experience at The Windsor Suites.

My positive experience started even before I left DC. An email from The Windsor confirming my reservation, getting my room preferences and providing me a number to text with for any questions made me very happy. After all, who makes calls anymore, am I right? Texting worked perfectly, I was notified when my room was ready and I could communicate that we would be arriving late due to insane traffic on I-95.

Location

When we arrived we were happy to see that the hotel is situated in the heart of the city, without being in the craziness of it. Just a block away from the city hall, it was the perfect location for us - accessibility without having to be in the middle of the busiest parts of town. The hotel is just a couple of minutes by foot from the city center, from Reading Terminal Market, the Philadelphia train station (convenient if you get there by Amtrak/SEPTA/etc). We didn’t do any sightseeing or touristy stuff this time (done that before), but the hotel is perfectly situated and convenient to do sightseeing and see major attractions as well.

Rooms

Check-in was easy and quick, and the folks at the front desk were friendly and answered our questions and gave us some local recommendations. There are lots of interesting Benjamin Franklin quotes on the walls and on elevator doors, which was cool. Made you think too J

We were in a one bedroom suite, which was MASSIVE! I swear, it was bigger than some of the apartments I have lived in! A huge balcony with city views, living area, kitchenette and a large bedroom with lots of light streaming in. A family would easily be comfortable in this! They also have studio suites, which I expect are also larger than average.

The balcony was great to sip our morning coffee (fully equipped kitchen with coffee maker = Win!), a glass of wine at sunset, and the roomy suite with comfortable beds was exactly what we needed.

It’s definitely not luxury, but it definitely wins for the location, quality, and pricepoint, and would be great for a family or even a group of friends who are in town for a fun getaway.

Pro Tip: The especially great thing about the suites is the rooftop pool which we used two day, we had it almost all to ourselves, which was fantastic! There is also a workout room in the basement.

Food

There is an Irish pub/restaurant in the lowest floor of the hotel building which serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and is open late for drinks as well. We didn’t try it, but it definitely seemed popular not just with hotel guests. The fully equipped kitchenette in the room is great if you want to cook a couple of meals too (head to Reading terminal Market to stock up or bring a picnic back to your room).

What you need to know:

1. Great location, convenient for sightseeing, business, or just a weekend away from home

2. Perfect for larger groups, families and couples

3. Parking is about $42 per night, which is pretty much the average for what you’d pay in the middle of any city.

4. Check out their website for packages – they always have a number of different options, but rates start at around $150.
